Prepare the necessary documents

Since you will be paying off your old loan and taking out a new one, you’ll need to submit many of the same documents you provided the first time around. Bank and brokerage statements will demonstrate that you have reserves to tide you over through a job loss or an emergency repair, though not all refinances require this documentation.

Consider cash-out refinancing to consolidate debt or fund a home improvement project

If you have significant equity in your home, cash-out refinancing enables you to consolidate debt, such as credit cards, auto loans or student loans, with the benefit of a lower interest rate.
